Adult Training

· Counselling Training – Level 1

This is a comprehensive 60-hour foundation course in Christian counselling. This course is accredited by the NQA and combines theory and practise and assesses whether counselling at a higher level is what the student wants to do. It is important to note that this course will not qualify one as a counsellor, but is the stepping stone for further counselling training with Philippi.

· Counselling Training – Level 2

This is a 270-hour course which provides participants with the knowledge, skill and attitude to becoming entry level practitioners in counselling. It is for those students who feel a calling to this particular ministry and who are able to meet the intense academic and personal demands which this course will pose. Completion of this course will provide one with access to the Level 3 Counselling training. Participants will need to have completed the Level 1 before commencing with this course.

· Counselling Training – Level 3

This is a two-year, part-time course leading to a professional qualification in counselling. Before being accepted on this course, students must demonstrate prior training and understanding of counselling practice. During the course students undertake learning in six main areas: Counselling Theory, Counselling Skills, Personal Development, Human Development Theory, Theology and Doctrine and Supervised Practice.

· Supervision Stage 1 and 2

This three-day course aims at increasing awareness with counsellors in the role of supervision in counselling practice and to assist them in gaining the most out of supervision. On this course counsellors will be informed about the function and purpose of a counsellor; how to tell the difference between counselling and supervision; be able to present a Biblical case for supervision within Christian counselling, to mention a few. Students may only participate in this course once they have completed the Level 2 and/or Counselling - Level 3.

Youth Training

· Listening and Responding Skills

This is a one-day course for people with little or no previous experience or training in counselling but feel that they want to develop their listening and responding skills. It demonstrates listening at a deeper level, asking relevant questions and responding in an appropriate manner. It also serves as a selection criterion for young people who want to go onto the second level of training, dealing specifically with children, the Psycho-social Support for OVC course.

· Psycho-social Support for Orphans & Vulnerable Children

This course is aimed at increasing the well-being of Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children as well as increasing the capacity of communities to provide Psycho-social support through the use of youth volunteers to these children.

The first phase is the one-day Listening and Responding Skills course, which enables young people to listen and respond in an appropriate manner. This course also identifies those who have the necessary skills to move on to the next level of training.

Group leaders are trained and equipped in the following fields:

  • What a healthy self-esteem is and how a healthy self-esteem will assist them in their work and relationships with others and how to better understand themselves as individuals

  • A better understanding of the needs of children and taking their development into consideration when meeting these needs

  • The importance of Experiential Learning

  • The rights of the child and their responsibilities with regards to these rights

  • Helping children cope with loss and grief

  • Bereavement counselling

  • Child abuse and how to recognise different forms of abuse.

For the practical part of training, the group leaders are taken on Experiential Learning Camps with children from various backgrounds and institutions. The aim of these camps is to enhance the child's coping skills in dealing with challenging and stressful life situations.

· Refresher Course in Counselling Skills

Counselling skills are critical for group leaders in their interactions with OVCs. Two levels of counselling training are offered: Level 1, or basic counselling skills; and, a subsequent specialized child-centred course for those who successfully complete Level 1 training.
