Training Courses offered
Adult Training
· Counselling
Training – Level 1
This is a comprehensive
60-hour foundation course in Christian counselling. This course is
accredited by the NQA and combines theory and practise and assesses
whether counselling at a higher level is what the student wants to do.
It is important to note that this course will not qualify one as a
counsellor, but is the stepping stone for further counselling training
with Philippi.
· Counselling
Training – Level 2
This is a 270-hour
course which provides participants with the knowledge, skill and
attitude to becoming entry level practitioners in counselling. It is for
those students who feel a calling to this particular ministry and who
are able to meet the intense academic and personal demands which this
course will pose. Completion of this course will provide one with access
to the Level 3 Counselling training. Participants will need to have
completed the Level 1 before commencing with this course.
· Counselling
Training – Level 3
This is a two-year,
part-time course leading to a professional qualification in counselling.
Before being accepted on this course, students must demonstrate prior
training and understanding of counselling practice. During the course
students undertake learning in six main areas: Counselling Theory,
Counselling Skills, Personal Development, Human Development Theory,
Theology and Doctrine and Supervised Practice.
· Supervision
Stage 1 and 2
This three-day course aims
at increasing awareness with counsellors in the role of supervision in
counselling practice and to assist them in gaining the most out of
supervision. On this course counsellors will be informed about the
function and purpose of a counsellor; how to tell the difference between
counselling and supervision; be able to present a Biblical case for
supervision within Christian counselling, to
mention a few. Students may only participate in this course once they
have completed the Level 2 and/or Counselling - Level 3.

Specialist Training
·
Counselling HIV /AIDS
Aimed at Health Care,
Community Workers and Pastors
The aim of this course
is to train community workers, health care givers and pastors on the
basic features of counselling and Christian counselling in HIV and
Advanced HIV Disease and related issues.
The training will equip
participants with the knowledge, skill and attitude required to work
with and counsel people infected and affected by HIV. Training can be
done over a one week period or three.
On completion of
training, participants will be able to:

Give an overview of
the natural progression of HIV and stages of infection
-
Have a thorough
understanding of the process involved in testing and assist persons
with information around testing
-
State clearly how
mother-to-child transmission of HIV takes place and know which
information to give counselees around this aspect
-
Counsel clients on
HIV treatment and refer clients for appropriate treatment
-
Assist clients to
deal with emotions during counselling
-
Perform pre- and
post-test counselling
-
Assist clients to
deal with bereavement
-
Seek personal
supervisors for themselves as counsellors and understand the
importance of personal support and debriefing

Youth Training
· Listening
and Responding Skills
This
is a one-day course for people with little or no previous experience or
training in counselling but feel that they want to develop their
listening and responding skills. It demonstrates listening at a deeper
level, asking relevant questions and responding in an appropriate
manner. It also serves as a selection criterion for young people who
want to go onto the second level of training, dealing specifically with
children, the Psycho-social Support for OVC course.

· Psycho-social Support for Orphans & Vulnerable Children
This course is aimed at
increasing the well-being of Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children as
well as increasing the capacity of communities to provide Psycho-social
support through the use of youth volunteers to these children.
The first phase is the
one-day Listening and Responding Skills course, which enables young
people to listen and respond in an appropriate manner. This course also
identifies those who have the necessary skills to move on to the next
level of training.
Group leaders are
trained and equipped in the following fields:

What a healthy
self-esteem is and how a healthy self-esteem will assist them in their
work and relationships with others and how to better understand
themselves as individuals
-
A better
understanding of the needs of children and taking their development
into consideration when meeting these needs
-
The importance of
Experiential Learning
-
The rights of the
child and their responsibilities with regards to these rights
-
Helping children
cope with loss and grief
-
Bereavement
counselling
-
Child abuse and how
to recognise different forms of abuse.
For the practical part
of training, the group leaders are taken on Experiential Learning Camps
with children from various backgrounds and institutions. The aim of
these camps is to enhance the child's coping skills in dealing with
challenging and stressful life situations.

· Refresher
Course in Counselling Skills
Counselling skills are
critical for group leaders in their interactions with OVCs. Two levels
of counselling training are offered: Level 1, or basic counselling
skills; and, a subsequent specialized child-centred course for those who
successfully complete Level 1 training.
