What we do at Philippi
Trust Namibia
We
provide a broad based, general Counselling
service with specialist
knowledge applied in the areas of HIV/AIDS,
Psycho-social Support
for Orphans & Vulnerable Children,
Child Abuse and Compulsive and Dependent Behaviour and specialise in
Counselling Skills Training.
Our
counselling is based on reflective
listening; it is non-intrusive, largely non-directive and fully
accepting of the counselees many of whom contact us directly or are
referred to us by church leaders, medics and community workers.
We are an
inter-denominational team of Christians
living out our faith in the service of others. By combining the best
Christian practices with secular wisdom
we
seek to bring understanding and healing to those in need.
The counselling support at Philippi is not an alternative but
complementary to social work interventions, psychotherapy, the love and
attention of a close friend, pastoral or any other form of care. People
from all age groups contact us to seek help.
Children are usually counselled with
the permission of a parent or guardian.
Training in counselling for community
counsellors and teachers as well as health care professionals and other
care workers is an integral part of our commitment to bring God's love,
joy, peace and healing into the lives of those in pain and in need of
hope so that they in turn learn to value their individuality and to
enjoy a wide range of personal relationships.
Professional training standards are
maintained throughout and our experienced counsellors subscribe to the
Code of Ethics of the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC), based
in the United Kingdom, to which Philippi Trust Namibia is affiliated.
Philippi Trust Namibia
is the first non-governmental organisation to offer Namibia
Qualifications Authority (NQA) accredited training courses.

Refresher Course in Counselling Skills
The psycho-social support we provide to orphans and vulnerable children
(OVC) is an ongoing process of meeting the essential needs for
meaningful and positive human development. A holistic approach is used
in empowering such children to move beyond their life situations and to
become productive and happy members of society.
Psycho-social Programme for
Orphans & Vulnerable Children—The
overall aim of the project is to increase the well-being of Orphans and
other Vulnerable Children (OVC), and to build the capacity of
communities to provide psycho-social support to OVC through the use of
youth volunteers. Philippi believes that the youth, when given adequate
training, can play a major part in combating HIV/AIDS and also in
empowering OVC.
Experiential Learning Camps—Children
from various institutions and communities are invited to take part in
Experiential Learning Camps. The aims of these camps are to enhance the
child’s coping skills in dealing with challenging and stressful life
situations. The children follow a programme and are coached on topics
such as ‘self esteem’, ‘sex and sexuality’ and ‘loss and bereavement’.
They partake in team-building sessions and fun-filled physical
activities such as abseiling and obstacle courses. These children are
orphaned or are in vulnerable situations and at these camps they are
taught to overcome their fears and difficulties through Experiential
Learning. These camps appeal to the children as they are taught through
experiences and not just through their intellect.
The Kids Clubs—After the
Experiential Learning Camps, group leaders get the opportunity to
establish Kids Clubs in their communities. The Kids Clubs provide
ongoing support for the children who have completed the Experiential
Learning Camps. Here they can experience further growth and development
and are taught basic life skills.
